it and apply the money towards paying off his men which he
promised to do. I then ask'd Stanly Cook (as he seem'd to
be the active person) if the company wou'd be willing and
satisfied to allow the remainder of Capt. Byas' account, which
was Rum and some other article, he said he believed they
wou'd, upon which I thought the matter wou'd be settled

[Payn's Statement.]
To all persons whome this may concern. I the subscriber
to the best of my knowledge and remembrance on a Monday
in March 1776, in my way home call'd in at the house of Mr
William Bennett's he being not present his wife and self fell
in discourse how the people call'd to Cook's point on account
of the man of war would get provisions, she says she had
sent or they had from them a certain quantity of meat, and as
near as possibly can remember the quantity she mention'd was
fifteen pounds, whether she spoke of the quantity by Imagina-
tion or Tryal of weights cannot Tell, for do not remember
either was mentioned. Before God and the World to the
best of my knowledge and remembrance give the above out
for as true Testimony as if my hand was on the Book and
mouth to kiss it. Witness

Tuesday, October 22d 1776.
Council met. Present the same members, as on yesterday
Ordered That Western shore Treasurer pay to the Clerk
thirty Pounds, to be accounted for.
Ordered, That said Treasurer pay to Godfrey and Elliott,
thirty two pounds, ten shillings, for Amt Acct
Ordered That said Treasurer pay to Captn Garrett Brown
fifty Pounds to be accounted for.
