A Message from the Lower house by Mrs Key and Hanson

By the Lower house of Assembly 10 April 1736
May it please your Honours
Whatever you may think of Our Want of Charity towards you,
yet We cannot depart from Our Opinion, that it was irregular and
unparliamentary for your House to desire to know, whether, we had
agreed to the Amendments proposed by you, to the bill for ascertain-
ing the Gauge of Tobacco hhds &c. We think that We might with the
Greatest Justice retort the Want of Charity in you, to imagine that if
that Bill had passed our house, We should upon any Account whatso-
ever have detained it: And as from the great Regard, you are
pleased to express you have for us, You ought not to have suspected
us to have acted in so unparliamentary a Manner; so from the great

Regard we now have, and always have had for your house we are
greatly surprized that you should have detained the two Engrossed
Bills mentioned in your Message of Yesterday by Philip Lee Esqr
which Bills We find by the respective Paper Bills were after the
Engrossment thereof read and assented to by your House whereas
the Bill concerning the Gauge of Tobacco hhds &c was on a third
Reading dissented to by Our house agreeable to the Usage and
Practice thereof; so that as those two Bills were engrossed and as-
sented to by both houses, We think it very unparliamentary for
Either house to detain the same, and therefore We hope that upon
mature Deliberation, you will likewise send us those two Bills, which
We are as justly entituled to as the Other Engrossed Bills, which you
have already sent; and that you will not think us so irresolute, and in-
consistent, as out of any Attachment to those Bills, or Our fear of
