there is any Tobo in the Treasury, your Excelly will be pleased
to send me 15 or 20 Hhds by Doctr Snabely. I believe I can dispose
of it here for Sixty Pounds p hundred

[Christr Lowndes, Bladensburgh, to His Excelly Thos S. Lee, Esqr]

In the Letter I sent to Mr T. Harwood covering notes for sixteen
Hheads Tobo lent to this State by Capt Fenwick, I mention'd that
I had etrong Expectations of receiving a sum of money, & if ye Tobo
was for Sale & within my Limitation, I wou'd become a Purchaser,
if I did not meet wth a disappointment in ye money, since that I have
reced a Letter from Mr Harwood, in wch he says ye Tobo I forward'd
is sold but that other Tobo at this Warehouse & George Town, is
for Sale, of this I shall be glad to know ye Quantity at each Place &
ye weight of each Hheads likewise ye Price that is expect'd for it, an
answer to ye above by return of ye Post, will much oblige.

[Joseph Crockett, Lt. Col. Com. B. G., Frederick Town, to Gov. Lee]

I Have waited with anxiety ten or twelve days on the trustees of
the poor House in expectation of renting it for the use of the guards
The gentlemen does not seem inclinable to give me a positive answer.
The Soldiers are much distressed for room 150 confined to three fire
places many lodges out of doors on the account of fire — and num-
bers have caught bad colds. I hope your Excellency will enter on
some method to furnish the Soldiers with Barracks. There is a
Captain Bradie of the British I am inform'd is in the Lower part of
this State who saith he has permission from the Governor & Coun-
cil to go any where in the State as also from Col. Wood, I would be
glad to be informed if he has received any such indulgence

[The Deposition of Driver Greeves taken by A. C. Hanson, one of
the Judges of the General Court]

The said Driver, being sworn on the Holy Evangels deposes and
says, that he lives in Calvert County near the month of Patuxent;
that, some Time in December last a Vessel commanded by a certain
Joseph Shoemaker cast Anchor in the said River, and lay there three
or four Days; that, in the mean Time, he went frequently on Board,
and found the Crew to consist, with the Captain, of three white
men, and one Negro; that the Captain complained of wanting Pro-
vision; that the Vessel had no Appearance of being an armed Vessel
in the Service of the Enemy, and that he had no Reason to suspect
her to be such, from the Conversation of any Person or Board; that,
the last Time he was there, a certain David Hunter came on Board ;
that he did not perceive Hunter had any Business, nor could he
collect from the Conversation, that Hunter had any Intimacy with
Shoemaker; that he was on Board several Hours with Hunter, and
when he went ashore left him there; that, about a Quarter of an
