LAND-HOLDER'S ASSISTANT. 11

America which now forms the State of Maryland, and which
in a history of the Country written about forty years after,
when other Colonies had also been established, is described
as lying " between the degrees of thirty-seven and fifty
" minutes or thereabouts and forty of Northern Latitude:
" bounded on the South by Virginia; on the North by New
" England, New Jersey, and part of New York lying on the
" East side of Delaware Bay; on the East by the Ocean, and
" on the West by that part of the Continent which lies in the
" longitude of the first fountains of the river called
" Patowmack." The tract so granted Lord Baltimore had intended
to call Crescentia, but in presenting the Patent to the King for
his signature he left the naming of it to his Majesty, who
proposed that it should be called Terra Mariae, or Maryland in
honour of his queen Henrietta Maria, which was concluded
on, and the territory erected into a Province by that name.

The affixing of the Great Seal having been some time
delayed, Lord Baltimore died before the Patent was completed, and
a Grant of the said Province was soon afterwards made to his
Son and heir Cecilius Baron of Baltimore, his heirs and assigns,
bearing date the twentieth day of June 1632, by the
description of " all that part of the Peninsula or Chersonese lying
" in the parts of America between the Ocean on the East and
" the Bay of Chesopeake on the West, and divided from the
" other part thereof by a right line drawn from the
" promontory or Cape of Land called Watkins's Point, situate in the
" Bay aforesaid, near the River Wighco on the West unto
" the main ocean on the East; and between that boundary
" on the South unto that part of the Bay of Delaware on the
" North which lieth under the fortieth degree of North
" Latitude from the Equinoctial, where New England is
" terminated; and all the tract of Land within the metes
" underwritten (that is to say) passing from the said Bay,
" called Delaware Bay, in a right line by the degree aforesaid
" unto the true meridian of the first fountain of the river
" Pattowmack; thence verging towards the South, unto the
" further Bank of the said river, and following the same on
" the West and South unto a certain place called Cinquack,
" situate near the mouth of the said River, where it
" disembogues into the aforesaid Bay of Chesopeake, and thence
" by the shortest line unto the aforesaid Promontory or place
" called Watkins's Point." The territory thus bounded,
and erected, as has been mentioned, into a Province, (being

said, to hold the plantation till his death in 1674. By what means it
became afterwards neglected and abandoned so that the very name of
Avalon is no longer known in Newfoundland I am not informed. The
titular Dominion of the Province of Avalon was kept up by the Baltimore
family till the time of Mr. Harford, who took the title of Proprietary of
Maryland alone.
