the committee of the house of delegates, who retired to the conference room, and after examination
of the ballots, returned and reported, that the honourable John Hoskins Stone, Esquire, is elected.
Whereupon it is declared in the senate, that the honourable John Hoskins Stone is duly elected
governor of Maryland.
    The following message was prepared, read and agreed to, and sent to the house of delegates by
the clerk.

By the SENATE, November 15, 1796.
        GENTLEMEN,
    THE joint committee of both houses having reported that the honourable John Hoskins Stone is
elected governor, we think proper to notify the same to him, and request his attendance in the senate
room to qualify agreeably to law, and have appointed James Hollyday, Esquire, to join any member
of your house for that purpose.
                                                            By order,                                A.  VAN-HORN, clk.
    The clerk of the house of delegates delivers to the clerk of the senate the following message:
By the HOUSE of DELEGATES, November 15, 1796.
        GENTLEMEN OF THE SENATE,
    WE have appointed Mr. James Hopewell to join James Hollyday, Esquire, to wait on the governor
elect, and request his attendance in the senate room to be qualified as governor of this state.
                                                            By order,                                W.  HARWOOD, clk.
Which was read.
    The honourable John Hoskins Stone, Esquire, the governor elect, attending in the senate room,
ORDERED, That the honourable Charles Carroll, of Carrollton, and John Eager Howard, Esquires,
inform the house of delegates that the honourable John Hoskins Stone, Esquire, the governor
elect, is attending in the senate room to qualify as governor of the state of Maryland, and request
their attendance.
    The speaker, attended by the members of the house of delegates, appeared in the senate room,
and the honourable John Hoskins Stone, Esquire, qualified as governor before the president of the
senate, in the presence of both houses, by taking the oaths directed by the constitution and form of
government, the oath of office prescribed by law, and by taking an oath to support the constitution
of the United States, and also by subscribing a declaration of his belief in the christian religion.
The senate adjourns till to-morrow morning 10 o'clock.

W    E    D    N    E    S    D    A    Y,    November 16, 1796.

    The senate met.  Present the same members as on yesterday.  The proceedings from the
seventh day of November to this day were read.
    The clerk of the house of delegates delivers to the clerk of the senate the following message:

By the HOUSE of DELEGATES, November 16, 1796.
        GENTLEMEN OF THE SENATE,
    WE propose to proceed immediately to the election of a council to the governor.  William Kilty,
John Davidson, Hugh Matthews, Jonathan Wilmer, Thomas Whittington, James Brice, James
Thomas and John Johnson are put in nomination by this house.  We have appointed Mr. Horatio
Ridout and Mr. Abraham Jarrett to join any gentlemen named by your house to examine the
ballots.
                                                            By order,                                W.  HARWOOD, clk.
Which was read.
    The clerk of the house of delegates delivers to the clerk of the senate a bill, entitled, An act to
settle and ascertain the salary of members of the council for the ensuing year, thus endorsed; " By 
" the house of delegates, November 11, 1796:  Read the first time and ordered to lie on the table.
                                                            " By order,                              W.  HARWOOD, clk.
" By the house of delegates, November 14, 1796:  Read the second time and will pass.
                                                            " By order,                              W.  HARWOOD, clk."
And also the following resolution:
By the HOUSE of DELEGATES, November 14, 1796.
    RESOLVED, That the auditor be and he is hereby authorised and directed to settle with Edward
Dennis, late a soldier in the third Maryland regiment, and grant a certificate, bearing interest
from the time of issuing the same, for the depreciation of pay which may appear to the auditor
to be due to said Dennis; and that the governor and council be and they are hereby authorised
to draw on the treasurer of the western shore, in favour of said Dennis, for the amount of the pay
due to him from the first day of August, seventeen hundred and eighty, to the first of January,
seventeen hundred and eighty-one.
                                                            " By order,                              W.  HARWOOD, clk.
Which were severally read the first time and ordered to lie on the table.
    The following message was read the first and second time, agreed to, and sent to the house of
delegates by the clerk.
By the SENATE, November 16, 1796.
        GENTLEMEN,
    WE agree to proceed immediately to the election of a council to the governor, and have appointed
James Hollyday and John Thomas, Esquires, to join the members of your house in the examination
