This Administration is responsible for
administering a group of programs directed
towards the health problems of adults, and
health and health related problems of the
aging. The Administration comprises Adult
Disease Control Services, Kidney Disease
Program of Maryland, Services to the Aging,
and Hospital Treatment Services.

ADULT DISEASE CONTROL
SERVICES

These services concentrate on programs
for the early detection and prevention of
diseases such as cancer, diabetes, hyper-
tension, tuberculosis, and for the protec-
tion of employee health and prevention of
diseases related to occupation.
KIDNEY DISEASE PROGRAM OF
MARYLAND

This program provides services to individ-
uals who have lost the function of their
kidneys, and as a result require specialized
treatment such as kidney transplantation or
hemodialysis. It is concerned with both
privately owned and State operated facili-
ties, and with such activities as certifica-
tion of the need of the patients for care,
certification of the facilities as meeting State
and Federal standards, and payment for pa-
tient care under some circumstances, etc.

These services include geriatric evalua-
tion, day care for the elderly, home health
services and nursing home care in two units
on the grounds of Spring Grove Hospital
Center.

HOSPITAL TREATMENT SERVICES

These services provide hospital level care
primarily for patients in need of rehabilita-
tion services, or for those inflicted with
chronic illness. A limited number of nursing
home beds and outpatient services are pro-
vided for selected patients, for example,
those needing hemodialysis or day care for
the elderly.
DEER'S HEAD CENTER

Deer's Head Center, authorized by Chap-
ter 994, Acts of 1945, was established in
1950 and has a licensed capacity of 235
patients. It is the regional facility for chron-
ically ill and aging adults in need of physical
medicine and rehabilitation services, or gen-
eral medical care for chronic diseases or
terminal illness. The center also operates a
kidney dialysis facility for area residents.

MUNIEBELLO CENTER

Montebello Center, authorized by Chap-
ter 412, Acts of 1951, opened in 1953 as
the principal unit of the chronic disease hos-
pital system. The Center provides hospitali-
zation for chronically ill and aging adults
in need of physical medicine and rehabilita-
tion services, or in need of general medical
care for chronic diseases or terminal illness.
