The State Board of Social Work Examiners was
created by Chapter 453, Acts of 1975. The Board
issues licenses to Social Work Associates, Gradu-
ate Social Workers, and Certified Social Workers.
Under certain conditions the Board may take
disciplinary measures to reprimand, suspend, re-
voke, or refuse to renew the license of a licensee.

The Board consists of five members appointed by
the Governor for three-year terms. Four members
must be licensed social workers. One member is a
consumer appointed on recommendation of the
Secretary of Health and Mental Hygiene with the
advice and consent of the Senate. The consumer
member cannot have training as a social worker or
have a financial interest in a related field.

Authorization for the Board continues until July
1, 1994 (Code Health Occupations Article, secs.
18-201 through 18-502).

SPEECH PATHOLOGISTS

Created by Chapter 547, Acts of 1972, the State
Board Examiners for Speech Pathologists evaluates
the qualifications of speech pathologists in Mary-
land and issues licenses to those who fulfill the
requirements. Licenses are renewed annually.

The Board consists of six members appointed by
the Governor upon recommendation of the Secre-
tary of Health and Mental Hygiene for five-year
terms. Three members must have had paid work

experience in speech pathology for at least five
years, hold the American Speech and Hearing
Association certificate of clinical competence in
speech pathology or the equivalent, and be ap-
proved by the Maryland Speech and Hearing
Association. One member must have had paid
work experience in audiology for at least five years,
hold the American Speech and Hearing Associa-
tion certificate of clinical competence in audiology
or the equivalent, and be approved by the Mary-
land Speech and Hearing Association. One mem-
ber must be a person licensed to practice medicine
in Maryland and hold a certificate of qualification
from the American Board of Otolaryngology. One
member must be a consumer, who has no training
or financial interest in the field of speech patholo-
gy-

19-101 through 19-502).

AND WASTE SYSTEMS OPERATORS

The State Board of Waterworks and Waste
System Operators was created by Chapter 430,
Acts of 1967. The Board certifies superintendents
and operators of waterworks and waste systems to
protect the public health and to prevent pollution.
The Board evaluates applications, prepares and
authorizes examinations, and issues certificates to
qualified persons.

The Board consists of nine persons representing
one or more of the following constituencies or
disciplines: municipal government, county govern-
ment, sanitary or metropolitan commissions, wa-
terworks supervision, wastewater or industrial
wastewater works supervision, agriculture, and one
engineer representative each from the Department
of Health and Mental Hygiene and the Depart-
ment of Natural Resources. Members serve four-
year terms, except for the representative of the
Department of Health and Mental Hygiene who
serves at the pleasure of the Secretary.
