LORRAINE M. SHEEHAN

Secretary of State

Lorraine M. Sheehan was born on May 2, 1937,
in Manchester, New Hampshire, where her father
and mother, Donat and Laurette Cantin still
reside.

Upon moving to Prince George's County, she
became active in numerous civic and political
organizations. She has participated in many elec-

tion campaigns, working for candidates as well as
ballot issues.

In 1974, Ms. Sheehan was elected to the House
of Delegates. She was assigned to the House
Judiciary Committee, 1975-1978, and the Ways
and Means Committee, 1978-1983. Serving on the
Joint Committee on Rape and Related Offenses,
she sponsored legislation that reformed the rape
laws in Maryland. Ms. Sheehan served as Deputy
Whip for the House of Delegates, and vice-
chairman of the Prince George's Delegation,
1978-1982. She currently chairs the Governor's
Advisory Board on Rape and Sexual Offenses.

Ms. Sheehan has been active in issues dealing
with health, aging, and the handicapped. She has
received the Ann Landon Scott Award for legisla-
tive excellence from the National Organization for
Women, the Religious Freedom Award, the Mar-
garet Sanger Award, and awards from the Devel-
opmental Disabilities Council, the Maryland Psy-
chological Association, the Maryland Association
for the Mentally Retarded, and the Mental Health
Association of Prince George's County.

She is a member of Parent-Teacher-Student
Associations, the Suitland Citizens Association,
the League of Women Voters, the Business and
Professional Women's Club, the Kettering Civic
Federation, Citizens for Branch Avenue Metro,
and the National Association of Secretaries of
State. She is a former board member of the Greater
South East Aging Center and the Suitland Rede-
velopment Corporation.

She resides in Largo with her three children,
Laura 19, John 18, and Neal 13. Her oldest son
Peter resides in Largo with his wife Deborah.
