American, Maryland State, and Baltimore City Bar As-

The United States Attorney and Assistant Attorneys are the federal government's principal trial law-
yers. The duties of the U.S. Attorney's Office include prosecuting all federal criminal cases and repre-
senting the federal government in civil litigation.

The United States Attorney is appointed to a four-year term by the President of the United States
with the advice and consent of the U.S. Senate. The U.S. Attorney serves at the pleasure of the Presi-
dent. Assistant Attorneys are chosen by the U.S. Attorney and appointed by the U.S. Attorney General
for indefinite terms.
