On motion by Mr. Fields,
The Senate proceeded to a temporary organization.
On motion by Mr. Fields,
The Hon. Barnes Compton, of Charles County, was called
to the Chair, and, having assumed the same, addressed the
Senators present.
The Senators elect then qualified, by taking the oath pre-
scribed by the Constitution, before the President, pro tern.
On motion by Mr. Stephenson, it wag
Ordered, That when the Senate adjourn, it stand ad-
journed until to-morrow morning at 12 o'clock.
On motion by Mr. Fields,
The Senate adjourned.
THURSDAY, January 4th, 1872.
The Senate met pursuant to adjournment,
Present at roll call the following Senators :
Messrs. Blake, Compton, Carroll, Crawford, Claggett, Den-
son, Dennis, Earle, Fields, Henry, Jump, Longwell, Miller,
Stephenson, Spates, Snyder, Sellman, Spencer, Steiner, Timmons, Tuck, Wilson, Williams—23.
Mr. Stephenson moved that the Senate proceed to the elec- .
tion of a President, and nominated the Hon. Henry Snyder,
-of the Second Legislative District of Baltimore City.
Mr. Steiner moved that the election be made by ballot,
Which was accepted by Mr. Stephenson.
Messrs. Stephenson and Steiner ware appointed by the
Chair as tellers.
The ballots being counted, it appeared that twenty-three
ballots had been cast, of which the Hon. Henry Snyder re-
ceived 22 votes, and that there was one blank ballot.
Whereupon, it was declared that the Hon. Henry Snyder
is duly elected President of the Senate.
Mr. Snyder was then conducted to the Chair by Messrs.
-Earle and Carroll,
