to remain at large in said town, to the great injury of the inhabitants
thereof; therefore,

    1818.

CHAP. 211.

    1.  BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That 
from and after the first day of May next, it shall not be lawful for
any person or persons whatsoever to raise or keep any swine within
the said town, or within one half mile from the centre thereof,
except in enclosures, or to suffer any swine to go and remain at
large therein, and if any swine shall be found going and remaining
at large within said town, it shall and may be lawful for any person
or persons to impound the same, and if impounded, such persons
shall immediately give notice, by advertisements set up in the
most public places in said town, describing the swine so impounded,
and if the owner or owners shall not, within five days thereafter,
prove his or her property therein, and make compensation for the
injury, if any, which may have been sustained by an inhabitant of
said town, to be ascertained by any two disinterested persons, inhabitants
as aforesaid, and shall not pay for every such swine the
sum of twenty-five cents for every day it shall have been so impounded,
it may be lawful for the person or persons so impounding
as aforesaid, to sell the same for his or her benefit.

    2.  AND BE IT ENACTED, That if any person or persons shall be
sued and impleaded for selling any such swine as aforesaid, the defendant
or defendants may plead the general issue, and give this
act and the special matter in evidence.

                                     CHAP. CCXII.
An Act relating to the Washington Monument.  Lib. TH. No. 6,
                                            fol. 441.

Passed Feb. 19, 1819.
    BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That 
the Washington Monument Lottery* in the city of Baltimore, be
and the same is hereby exempted from the delay in the time of
drawing, imposed by the act† to regulate lotteries within this state.

                                     CHAP. CCXIII.
An Act to pay the Civil List, and other expenses of Civil Government.

Passed Feb. 19, 1819.
    WHEREAS those who dedicate their time, abilities and labour, to
the public, ought to receive a reasonable compensation for their services;
Preamble.
    1.  BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That 
the following officers of civil government, for the time being,
shall be entitled to receive at the rate of the following salaries, in
current money, for the ensuing year, to wit:  The treasurer of the
western shore, two thousand dollars; the treasurer of the eastern
shore, four hundred and fifty dollars; the auditor, five hundred dollars;
the clerk of the council, one thousand dollars; the clerk of the
senate, one hundred and fifty dollars; the clerk of the house of delegates,
three hundred dollars; the printer to the state, fourteen hundred
dollars; the messenger to the council, two hundred and fifty
dollars.

    2.  AND BE IT ENACTED, That all monies which shall remain in
the treasury after discharging the journal of accounts, and all unappropriated
money which may come into the treasury, be first applied
to the payment of the civil list for the ensuing year.
