CHAP. 169.

                                LAWS OF MARYLAND.

James Pearce, Thomas B. Daffin, Peregrine F. Bayard,
William Summers, Dekar Thompson, Nathan Whitby, John Boon;

For Talbot.
 
 
 

Severally incorporated.

    For Talbot—Edward Lloyd, Jacob Gibson, Samuel Stevens, junior,
Robert Moore, Robert H. Goldsborough, Samuel S. Dickinson,
Robert Lloyd Nicols, James Goldsborough, James Nabb, John
Kersey, William Hayward, Peter Denny, Peter Edmondson, Solomon
Dickinson and William Brown, be and they are hereby appointed
managers of the said Boards of Agriculture; and the said managers,
and their successors, in the several aforesaid counties, shall
be and they are hereby erected and declared to be, bodies politic,
in deed and in law, by the names of The Managers of the Boards
of Agriculture for the respective counties before mentioned, by
which name and title they the said managers, and their successors,
shall be capable to hold, to them and their successors, for the use
of the said board of agriculture, monies or effects not exceeding
two thousand dollars, and the same, or any part thereof, to put out
to interest, for the use of the said boards, in such manner as the
said managers, or a majority of them, may determine, and to apply
the emolument thereof for the promotion of the objects contemplated
by this act of incorporation.
Managers to propose
a scheme of
a lottery for each 
county.

 

Proviso.

    3.  AND BE IT ENACTED, That it shall and may be lawful to and
for the said managers, so as aforesaid appointed for the several
counties respectively, or a majority of them, to propose a scheme
or schemes of a lottery, for raising a sum of money, not exceeding
two thousand dollars, for each of said counties, and to sell and
dispose of the tickets thereof; Provided, the said managers, or a
majority of them, do, before the sale of any ticket or tickets in the
said lotteries, give bond to the state of Maryland in the penalty of
ten thousand dollars, conditioned, that they will well and truly apply
so much of the money arising therefrom, within twelve months
after the drawing of said lotteries, as will satisfy the fortunate adventurers
for prizes drawn by them, and after deducting the necessary 
expenses incurred in said lottery, and the residue thereof
to the purposes of the said boards of agriculture in the said counties;
and the said bond shall be lodged in the clerk's office of the
several counties herein mentioned, therein to be recorded, and
upon such bond, or any office copy thereof, suit or suits may be instituted
against the obligors therein, for any breach or non-compliance
with the condition thereof.
Managers authorised
to make ordinances
for government
of said
societies.
    4.  AND BE IT ENACTED, That the said managers, and their
successors, in the said counties, or a majority of them, shall have
full power and authority to make ordinances for the good government
of the said societies, to appoint a president, secretary and
treasurer, to the said societies, and to award and dispose of the annual
emoluments in such premiums or medals as may be best calculated
to promote the improvement of domestic manufactures or
agriculture in this state.
Treasurers to enter
into bond, &c.
    5.  AND BE IT ENACTED, That the treasurers so respectively to
be appointed, shall, before they enter on the duties of the said
office, enter into bond to the sid boards of agriculture, with such
security as the said boards may approve of, conditioned for the
faithful performance of their duty; and that the said boards cause
a statement of the distribution of their premiums or medals to be
published annually in some newspaper in this state.
