                                        Proceedings
                                      of the Election
                        of President and Vice President
                        of the United States of America
                        in and for the State of Maryland.
                                              1852

            On the first Wednesday in December being the first day
of the said month in the year one thousand eight hundred and
fifty two the day appointed by the Constitution and laws of the
United States on which the Electors of President and ice President
of the United States of America are directed to assemble
and perform the trust reposed within them appeared in the
Senate Chamber in the City of Annapolis (the place designate
by act of assembly for the meeting of said Electors) the following
gentlemen who had been proclaimed by the Executive authority
of this State to have been duly Elected Electors of President
and Vice President of the United States in and for the State
if Maryland towit:
                        Cathell Humphreys     of Somersett County
                        Robert M. McLane    of Baltimore City
                        John Parran                of Calvert County
                        Richard N. Alvey       of Washington County
                        Carroll Spence           of Baltimore City
                        Charles J. M. Gwynn  of Baltimore City
                        Joseph A. Wickes       of Kent County
                        Ephraim K. Wilson      of Worcester County
            The said Electors severally qualified by taking the oath
prescribed by the Constitution to be taken by all civil officers
and by declaring their belief in the Christian Religion.
            On motion of Mr. McLane, Cathell Humphreys was unanimously
chosen President.
            On motion of Mr. McLane Jonathan Pinkney was unanimously
appointed Secretary who duly qualified as such.
            On motion of Mr. McLane William Murdoch was appointed
messenger and James Hopkins doorkeeper who severally
qualified.
                On motion of Mr. McLane the Electors proceeded to
ballot for President of the United States.
                Mr. McLane nominated Franklin Pierce of the
State of New Hampshire.  The ballots of the Electors were
deposited in the ballot box which was sealed and delivered
