COMPTROLLER OF THE TREASURY. IX

Notaries Public for taxes on protests, amounting to
$1,539.10.

Table No. 12" shows the receipts during the fiscal
year 1888, from Sheriffs, on account of excess of fees,
interest and fines and forfeitures, amounting to $2,469.31

"Table No. 13" shows the revenue from Licenses to
Foreign Insurance Companies for the fiscal year 1888;
amounting to an aggregate of $42,181.12.

"Table No. 14" shows in detail the amounts of State
taxes for 1888, remaining uncollected in the hands of
Collectors in the several counties and City of Baltimore,
at the close of the fiscal year 1888, amounting to
$380,912.35.

"Table No. 15" shows balances due from Collectors;
for years previous to 1888, amounting to $481,810.35.

The largest portion of this amount, viz: $316,475.63 is
due from the City of Baltimore.

"Table No. 16>; shows balances due from Sheriffs for
various years previous to and including 1888, amounting

to $23,688.98.

"Table No. 17" shows balances due, from Clerks of
Courts, Registers of Wills, and other Officers, the Susi
quehanna and Tide Water Canal Companies, and Col-
umbia and Port Deposit Railroad Company, for interest
amounting to $582,709.85.

This large amount is mainly for interest due from
Susquehanna Canal Company,the Tide-Water Canal Com-
pany and the Columbia and Port Deposit Railroad Com-
pany, in regard to each of which negotations are in prog-
ress for settlement.

The Columbia and Port Deposit Railroad Company:
has within a few days notified the Treasurer of its in
tention to pay a portion of its indebtedness at once,and
gradually to reduce the amount until the whole inter-
est due from it is paid.

"Table No. 18" shows the amounts due from various-
Corporations for State taxes for various years,.
