REPORT OF THE COMPTROLLER OF THE TREASURY vii

gratifying and the greater part of the property subject to tax-
ation could be discovered and brought into the assessable basis
and thereby the present total would be increased many millions
of dollars.

The Levy for State taxes for 1892 on the real and per-
sonal property of the State at 17 3/4 cents on each one hundred
dollars, amounted.to $914,368.98.

PUBLIC SCHOOL TAX.

Statement " L," shows in detail the lyevy, Receipts and
Disbursements, on account of Public School Tax. The Levy
for the year ending 30th September, 1892, amounted in the
aggregate to $540,894.32.

The Receipts for the same period, amounted to $551,-
402.43, being less by §24,948.21 than of the previous year.

The disbursements of the School Tax for the fiscal year
amounted to $560,512.86, being less by $46,692.37 than for the
year 1891.

LICENSES, ETC.

The accompanying Tables from No. 1 to 12, both inclu-
sive, show the various receipts into the Treasury from all
sources during the fiscal year.

The receipts from Clerks of Courts and other officers as
shown in Table No. 1, amounted to $895,385,56, an increase
over 1891 of $12,401,43.

And from Registers of Wills (Table No. 2,) the sum of
$173,384.38, being $56,897.35 in excess of the previous year.

The receipts from the Collectors of Taxes in the several
counties and the City of Baltimore, as shown in detail in Table
No. 3, aggregated $801,495,75, being less than the amount
collected for 1891 by $52,226.59.

The receipts for tax on gross receipts of Railroads and
other Corporations as shown in " Table No. 5 " amounted to
$133,016.34, being in excess of receipts for 1891 by $17,079.58.

The receipts into the Treasury from Incorporated Institu-
tions, paid as State Tax on their Shares of Capital Stock, dur-
ing the fiscal year as given in detail in Table No. 7, amounted
to $101,274,37, an increase over 1891 of $10,185.90.

STATE TOBACCO INSPECTIONS.
The gross receipts from State Tobacco Inspections during

the fiscal year to September 30TH, 1892, were............ $55.963.83

Disbursements during same period on acc't of salaries, &c. 46,649.48

Leaving net balance of.................................................. 9,314 35

Of which sum there was paid into the State Treasury...... 8,612.76

Leaving..................................................................... $701.59

Which has been paid into the Treasury since the close of
the fiscal year. Table No. 8, will show the receipts and dis-
bursements in detail.

Table No. 12 shows the receipts into the Treasury from
licenses and tax upon premiums paid by Foreign Insurance
Companies, amounting to$113,601.83, an increase of $26,060.06.
