1446 ARTICLE 5.

17. Any trustee of the poor may, under his hand in writing, direct
what poor shall be received into such almshouse.

18. Any justice of the peace of the county, or any person authorized
by said jutsice, may apprehend or cause to be apprehended and com-
mitted to the said almshouse any vagrants, vagabonds, beggars or other
idle, dissolute and disorderly persons found loitering or residing in said
county, who follow no labor or occupation, and have no visible means of
subsistence, there to be kept at hard labor for any time not exceeding six
months.

19. No person shall, under the penalty of twenty-five dollars, sell any
strong liquor or other matter or thing whatsoever to, or purchase anything
from, any person committed to said almshouse.

20. All sheriffs, constables, and other officers shall aid and assist the
trustees of the poor and the officers employed by them in the execution of
their respective offices; and if any person shall at any time be sued or
prosecuted for anything done in pursuance of the preceding sections of
this subtitle of this Article, he may plead the general issue and give the
special matter in evidence in his defence; and if upon trial verdict shall
be given for the defendant, or if the plaintiff shall be non-suited or dis-
continue, the defendant shall recover treble costs, and if the plaintiff shall
be unable to satisfy the same they shall be paid by the attorney who
brought or prosecuted the suit, unless the plaintiff shall give security for
the costs, to be approved by the court.

21. The said trustees may pay any clerk they may appoint the sum
of sixty dollars per annum for his services.

22. The County Commissioners are authorized, in the name of and
for the said county, to subscribe for and hold shares of stock in the Balti-
more and Drum Point Railroad Company to an amount not exceeding one
hundred thousand dollars at the par value of said shares.*

the Acts of 1927.)

*The other sections of ch. 159, 1874, provide for the issuance of the bonds and
for the levying of taxes to pay interest on and to redeem said bonds.
