ARCHIVAL AND MANUSCRIPT ACCESSIONS
The Hall of Records has been collecting the early records of
Maryland for more than a quarter of a century. Even so, colonial
records still may be found occasionally in our county courthouses. Last
year a discovery was made in the attic of the Queen Anne's County
Courthouse, which is being renovated. It is easy to see why this cache was
not located sooner. There was no stairway to the attic; entry was made by
ladder through a trapdoor located above a cupboard and barely large
enough to permit the passage of a human adult.
Among the records found were three volumes of Judgments and a
number of early Court Dockets and Minute Books. These filled some—
though not all—of the gaps in the records of the Clerk of Court that
were already in our custody. Other items included in the transfer were
Assessment Books, Levy Lists, Minutes of the Commissioners of the
Tax, Minutes of the Levy Court and other early records of the County
Commissioners, which are invaluable for research in the administrative
history of the county. While working in the county, we arranged to
borrow the early Marriage License Records and Land Commissions to
make microfilm copies for our own use.
The five seventeenth-century Administration Bonds deposited by
the Kent County Register of Wills had somehow escaped from the main
body of Bonds which were transferred some years ago. The Ledgers of
the Commissioners of the Tax received from the County Commissioners
of the same county provide an unusually complete record of tax assess-
ments and tax payments, listing all property owners by district.
