of his papers a matter of unusual interest. These papers, like those of
all other Governors who have served since Governor Harry W. Nice, are re-
stricted and may be seen only by special permission of the Archivist. If
the ex-Governor is still living, written permission to use the files must
be obtained from him also.

The seemingly endless project for making microfilm security
copies of the Land Records of Baltimore City produced another 192 reels,
each reel containing two volumes. The dates covered are 1945-1947, which
leaves only the period 1947-1949 to be done in order to complete the
project. Since 1949, the Land Records have been filmed on a current basis.
These records, as well as those of the Baltimore County Register of Wills,
were microfilmed for us by the office of origin. The records of the
Register of Wills of Baltimore City were filmed by our photographer.

Through the courtesy of Lieutenant Governor Blair Lee III, we
were permitted to make a photostat copy of Dennis Griffith's "Map of
the State of Maryland," 1794. The map had an interesting history. In
1792 Griffith petitioned the General Assembly, explaining that he had
been engaged in preparing the map for many months and had now exhausted
his funds, he requested a loan to enable him to complete the project. A
resolution to lend him fclOOO was defeated on first reading in the House of
Delegates, but was eventually reconsidered and adopted.

During the summer of 1971, the Hall of Records - Historic
Annapolis Indexing Project completed an index of twelve counties of the
Maryland State Assessment of 1783. It includes Anne Arundel, Baltimore,
Cecil, Charles, Dorchester, Harford, Kent, Montgomery, Queen Anne's,
Talbot, Washington and Worcester Counties. Caroline County was not done
because of the unhappy disarrangement of the records and Somerset County existed
at the Hall of Records only on microfilm. The remaining two counties will
be done in the summer of 1972. Only St. Mary's, Prince George's and Calvert
Counties will then be lacking. The index is by name of owner of land and
by tract name, making it very useful to researchers.

We benefitted this year from the efforts of a volunteer worker,
Mrs. Truman E. Hinton, historian of Prince George's County, who indexed
the Certificates of Freedom 1805-1856 and the Slave Statistics 1867-1869
of that county.

Mrs. Ellefson of our staff, checked and filed the index to
Charles County Guardian Accounts. She also did an index to veterans of the
War of 1812, as revealed in the Laws, Orphans' Court Proceedings, Council
Proceedings and Orders on the Treasurer of the Western Shore. She did
the same thing for the Revolutionary War Pensions. She began sorting out the
Confiscated Property Papers, and this task was finished by Miss Vanorny.
Miss Vanorny also indexed Caveat records and a name and tract index was
compiled. She also made a card index of plats filed during Caveat hearings.

We received two large series of printed books by gift. From the
estate of Richard Hammond Elliott we added ten titles, nearly all of which
