further authorised and required to remove the criminals adjudged, or who may be adjudged, to la-
bour on the public roads of Baltimore county, to work and labour on the aforesaid road until the
same shall be opened and put in complete repair; provided nevertheless, that the said levy court
shall work the said criminals on the Reisterstown and York-town turnpike roads, so as to keep the
same in repair for the receipt of tolls.

LVII.

A Further supplement to an act, entitled, Aa act for the relief of the
poor of Cascil county.

Passed Janua-
ry 12, 1808.

BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the office of the present trustees of the
poor of Caecil county shall cease and be at an end on the first Monday of May next, and the
appointment of the trustees of the poor of said county shall, from and after the first Monday of
April next, be vested in the levy court of said county.

II. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the levy court of Caecil county shall be and they are hereby au-
thorised and required, at their first meeting hi April next, and at their first meeting in the month of
April in each succeeding year thereafter, to appoint five discreet and proper persons, qualified agree-
ably to the provisions of the original act, and the supplement thereto, and of this act, to be trustees
of the poor of the said county from and after the first Monday of May next.

III. AND BE IT ENACTED, That it shall be the duty of the clerk of the said court, within fire
days after such appointment, and within the like time after any future appointments to be made in
virtue of this act, to make out and deliver to the sheriff of the said county a certificate of the ap-
pointment of each of the said trustees so appointed, or to be appointed, endorsing one of the said
certificates for each of them respectively, which said sheriff shall, within six days thereafter, deli-
liver one thereof to each of the said trustees respectively, and it shall thereupon be the duty of the
several trustees, so appointed and notified of such appointment, and who shall accept thereof, (un-
der the penalty imposed by the said original act upon any person appointed a trustee of the poor in
virtue of the said act for wilfully refusing or delaying to take upon him the duties of the said office,)
to meet on the said first Monday of May next ensuing such appointment, (except prevented by sick-
ness, or other unavoidable accident, and in such case as soon thereafter as the disability shall be
removed,) at the alms and work-house of the said county, and qualify in the manner prescribed by
the original act, and thenceforward to proceed in the execution of the duties of said office; provided
nevertheless, that nothing herein contained shall prevent the said court from re-appointing any of
the existing trustees, not exceeding five, if they, in their discretion, shall deem it adviseable and
proper so to do.

IV. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the existing trustees shall meet at the aforesaid alms and work-
house on the first Monday of May next, and deliver over to their successors all books and papers,
and all and singular the property belonging to the aforesaid alms and work-house, under the penalty
of twenty dollars each, to be recovered and applied as other fines and forfeitures are directed to be
recovered and applied in the aforesaid original act, or the supplement thereto, to be taken under the
care and management of the said newly appointed trustees.

V. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the trustees of the poor to be appointed in virtue of this act, shall
and may have, and they are hereby invested with, all the powers and authorities, and subject to all
the penalties for neglect of the duties of trustees of the poor of said county, as are mentioned and
declared in the said original act, except the power of appointing new trustees or filling up casual
vacancies in their own board, and in all cases of vacancies happening by non-acceptance, death, re-
signation, removal out of the county, or disqualification, of any of the said trustees, the vacancies
thereby occasioned shall be filled up by the said levy court, at their next meeting which shall happen
thereafter.

VI. AND BE IT ENACTED, That it shall be the duty of the trustees of the poor to be appointed
In virtue of this act, under the penalty of fifty dollars each, to be recovered and applied as herein
before directed, to make out and render to the said levy court, at their first meeting in April in each
year, a statement of their accounts and expenditures, with the necessary vouchers, for the preceding
year, which accounts shall be settled and passed by the said court, previous to the making out the
new appointments of trustees,
