SENATE JOURNAL

SPECIAL SESSION

ANNAPOLIS, MD., Saturday, December 17, 1949.

STATE OF MARYLAND, To WIT :

Saturday, the 17th day of December in the year nineteen hundred
and forty-nine, being the day appointed by the proclamation of the
Governor of Maryland for the meeting of the General Assembly of
Maryland in Extraordinary Session, the Senate was called to order
by the Secretary of the Senate.

The following Senators answered to their names:

Messrs.—

Bailey, Balch, Barton, Beck, Byrnes, Carter, Davis, Della, Ellison, Fraley,
Goldstein, Hoff, Hofferbert, Johnson, Guy, Johnson, T. F., Kimble, McAllister,
McLaughlin, Monroe, O'Neill, Phoebus, Shallcross, Sotheren, Storm, Strom-
berg, Stromeyer, Thomas, Turnbull, White. Total—29

Twenty-nine Senators having answered the roll call, and a quorum
being present, the Senate of Maryland, Extraordinary Session of
December 17th, 1949, is now ready for the transaction of business.

The first order of business will be the election of the temporary
President.

NOMINATION FOR PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE.

The Hon. Joseph R. Byrnes nominated the Hon. Thomas F. John-
son as President pro tem, which was duly seconded. There being no
other nominations, the Hon. Thomas F. Johnson was unanimously
elected President pro tem.

The Senators from Howard and Baltimore Counties escorted
Senator Johnson to the Chair. The President pro tem delivered
a short address.

Prayer was offered by the Senator from Somerset County.

At this time the new Senator from Anne Arundel County was
escorted to the rostrum to take the oath of office. The oath was
taken by Senator Stromeyer.
