him by the sheriff, shall also serve as a special investiga-
tor and county detective in all criminal matters in said
County, and in this connection, shall also operate under the
joint supervision and direction of the Sheriff and State's
Attorney for said County. The said Chief Deputy shall
be allowed a sum of Three Hundred Dollars per annum for
traveling expenses, to be paid by the County Commis-
sioners in monthly installments; and no further sum or
sums are to be allowed the said Chief Deputy.

The Sheriff of Dorchester County is hereby authorized
and required to appoint a deputy sheriff for said county
who shall receive a salary of Nine Hundred and Ten Dol-
lars per annum, to be paid to the said deputy sheriff in
monthly installments. The said deputy sheriff shall hold
office at the pleasure of the sheriff and may be removed by
said sheriff at any time said sheriff may elect.

503-B. The Sheriff of Dorchester County, Chief Deputy
and all other deputies are hereby authorized, directed and
required to serve all process, both civil and criminal, issu-
ingf out of the several magistrates' courts and police courts
for said Dorchester County.

503-C. It shall be the duty of the County Commis-
sioners to pay for all supplies and provisions necessary, in
their judgment, for the support and maintenance of all
persons committed to the jail, said supplies and provisions
to be purchased by the sheriff and placed at the said jail
and the bills for the same shall be presented by the sheriff
to said County Commissioners for approval and payment,
provided, however, that the said County Commissioners
are hereby directed and prohibited from approving or allow-
ing the payment to the sheriff of any claim for food and
provisions furnished for the keep and board of prisoners
where the amount claimed is in excess of forty cents per
day for each prisoner actually committed to the jail of said
County, and the said County Commissioners shall furnish
all fuel and light needed for said jail; and the sheriff shall
have the authority and power to appoint such assistants,
with the approval of the County Commissioners, as may
be necessary in any emergency, said assistants to be paid
such salary as the County Commissioners may direct.

503-D. It shall be the duty of the sheriff to keep a
correct and full statement or schedule of all persons com-
mitted to the jail, showing the length of time and the
charge upon which they are committed, and the name of
the officer, which statement or schedule, together with all
