CHAP. LXXXV.

Passed 25th of

January, 1806.

An ACT to withdraw the funds from Washington and Saint-John's
colleges, and subject the same to the appropriation of the legislature.

BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the sum of seven hundred and fifty
pounds, now appropriated by law as an annual donation to Washington college, and the sum of
seventeen hundred and fifty pounds, appropriated by law as an annual donation to Saint-John's col-
lege, be and the same are hereby respectively discontinued after the first day of June next; and the
said sums respectively shall be and remain in the treasury, subject to the appropriation of the legis-
lature to literary purposes, and for disseminating learning in the several counties of this state, and
not to other or different purposes.

II. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the second section of an act, entitled, An act to provide a per-
manent fund for the further encouragement and establishment of Washington college, and also the
nineteenth section of the act, entitled, An act for founding a college on the western shore of this
state, and constituting the same, together with. Washington college on the eastern shore, into one
university, by the name of The University of Maryland, be and the same are hereby respectively
repealed and annulled after the aforesaid first day of June next.

CHAP. LXXXVI.

Passed 25th of

An ACT to establish permanent salaries for the judges of the six
judicial districts in this state.

WHEREAS by the thirtieth section of the declaration of rights it is declared, that salaries
liberal, but not profuse, ought to be secured to the judges, during the continuance of their
commissions; therefore,

II. BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That each chief judge of the several ju-
dicial districts in this state shall receive, for his salary, the sum of two thousand two hundred dol-
lars per annum, and each associate judge of the said several judicial districts shall receive, for his
salary, the sum of fourteen hundred dollars per annum; and the treasurer of the western shore shall
be and he is hereby authorised and directed to pay quarterly, out of any unappropriated money which
may be in the treasury, to each of the said chief judges, and to each of the said associate judges, or
his order, the salary which he is entitled to receive by law.

III. AND BE IT ENACTED, That the said judges shall receive no other or further compensation
than what is allowed in this act, any thing in any law to the contrary notwithstanding.

CHAP. LXXXVII.

Passed 25th of

An ACT to authorise the drawing of a lottery for the benefit of St.
Mary's college, in Baltimore county.

WHERE AS it has been represented to this general assembly, by the petition of William Du-
bourg, president of St. Mary's college, in behalf of himself and his associates, the vice-
president and professors in said college, that they have incurred d heavy debt in the establishment
of their seminary, by the purchase of the site, and erection of the buildings necessary for the ac-
commodation of their pupils, and that their funds are inadequate to the discharge, thereof, unless
assisted by legislative aid, they therefore pray for permission to propose the scheme of a lottery to
raise a sum of money for paying off the said debt; and the prayer thereof appearing reasonable,
therefore,

II. BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the reverend William Du Bourg,
the reverend John Tessier, Luke Tiernan, Robert Walsh, senior, William Lorman, Alexander
M'Kim, Henry Wilson, Samuel Sterrett, James M'Henry, Samuel Hollingsworth, Lewis Dubourg
and Philip Laurenson, or a majority of them, be authorised to propose a scheme of a lottery for
raising a sum of money, not exceeding thirty thousand dollars, and dispose of the tickets in the said
lottery, as well in the city of Baltimore as in any other part of the state, any law to the contrary
notwithstanding, and shall proceed to draw the said lottery; provided that the said William Dubourg,
John Tessier, Luke Tiernan, Robert Walsh, senior, William Lorman, Alexander M'Kim, Henry
