United before the acquiring such real property; provided always, that nothing in this act con-
tained shall in any manner defeat or affect any right, title or claim, to the said property, or any
part thereof, acquired or prosecuted by any person or persons whatever before the passage of this act.

An ACT to authorise and empower the levy court of Worcester
county to assess and levy a sum of money for the support and
maintenance of Susanna Davis.

WHEREAS it is represented to this general assembly, by the petition of Sophia Davis, in be-
half of her mother, Susanna Davis, that she is a very poor woman, having no means of
support except by her labour, and of a very weak and infirm constitution; that she has supported
her said mother, (who is now upwards of an hundred years old, and blind, ) for several years past;
and praying that a law may pass, authorising the levy court of Worcester county to levy a sum of
money on the assessable property of said county for the support and maintenance of her said mother;
and the facts stated in said petition appearing to be true, therefore,

II. EE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the levy court of Worcester coun-
ty shall be and they are hereby directed and empowered, at their levy court annually, so long as
they shall see cause, to assess and levy, on the assessable property of said county, a sum of money,
not exceeding twenty-five dollars, for the support and maintenance of the said Susanna Davis, and
that the same be collected annually by the collector or collectors of Worcester county, and paid to
such person as the levy court of said county shall or may direct.

CHAP. VI.

An ACT for the relief of Hugh Lemmon and James Burton, of
Frederick county,

Dec. 1806.

WHEREAS Hugh Lemmon and James Burton, of Frederick county, emigrated to, and settled
in, this state, and since their emigration and settlement as aforesaid have acquired real
property therein, and their title to such property, from their not having become naturalized agreea-
bly to the laws of the United States, may be called in question, to their great detriment and injury;

therefore.

Preamble.

II. BE IT ENACTED, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the title of the real property, law-
fully and fairly acquired by the aforesaid Hugh Lemmon and James Burton, whether such title be
derived by gift, grant, purchase or devise, be and the same is hereby as amply and us fully vested in
the persons aforesaid, to all intents and purposes, as it they had been naturalized agreeable to said
laws; provided always, that nothing in this act contained shall in any manner defeat or affect any
right, title or claim, to the said property, or any part thereof, acquired or prosecuted by any per-
son or persons whatever before the passage of this act; and provided also, that unless the said Hugh
Lemmon and James Burton shall, on or before the first day of October next, proceed, according to
law, to make themselves citizens of the United States, this act shall have no effect to confirm their
title to the property above mentioned, nor shall they, or any person claiming under him, or either
of them, derive any benefit under this act; but if the said Hugh Lemmon and James Burton, or
either of them, shall die before the time when, by the laws of the United States, they may become
citizens thereof, nothing in this proviso contained shall prevent them, or either of them, from trans-
mitting or transferring his or their said property. Ly descent or devise, to any issue he may leave
residing within the United States, who is hereby declared capable in law to hold the same, or to
any other person, being a citizen of the United States, capable in law to hold the same.

An ACT authorising John Evans, James Cockran and Joseph Phil-
lips, securities of Samuel Cowden, late sheriff of Caecil county,
to complete the collections of said sheriff.

WHEREAS it represented to this general assembly of Maryland, by the petition of John
Evans, James Cockran and Joseph Phillips, securities ef Samuel Cowden, late sheriff of
Caecil county, that owing to the death of said Samuel Cowden, who has left his business in a very
unsettled and unfinished state, they apprehend the most serious injury in the settlement of the bu-
