690                                       LAWS OF MARYLAND                             [Ch.

the Code. A similar definition appears in
subtitle 11.

(N) "PACKER" MEANS ANY PERSON HAVING A FIXED
PLACE OF BUSINESS AND BUYING, SELLING, PACKING,
SHUCKING, OR PREPARING OYSTERS FOR SALE, TRADE,
BARTER, OR SHIPMENT TO ANY DEALER, MERCHANT, OR
RETAILER.

REVISOR'S NOTE: This subsection presently appears
as Article 66C, section 696 (n) of the Code.
The only changes made are in style.

(O) "PATENT TONGS" MEANS ANY PINCERS, NIPPERS,
TONGS, OR SIMILAR DEVICE USED TO CATCH OYSTERS AND
CLAMS RAISED WITH ROPE, CABLE, OR OTHER HOISTING GEAR.

REVISOR'S NOTE: This subsection is new language
derived from Article 66C, section 696(b) of
the Code. This definition is made
applicable to clam as well as oysters since
patent tongs are used for catching clams.
A similar definition appears in subtitle
11.

(P) "SHINNECOCK RAKE" MEANS A HAND TOOL USED TO
CATCH HARD-SHELL CLAMS OR OYSTERS. IT USUALLY

OUTWARDLY, AND UPWARDLY CURVING TEETH WHICH ARE
PROGRESSIVELY SMALLER TOWARDS THE ENDS, FORM A BASKET,
AND ARE SET TRANSVERSELY AT THE END OF A LONG, USUALLY
WOODEN HANDLE.

REVISOR'S NOTE: This subsection is new language
to clarify what is meant by the term as
used in the Code. The definition also
avoids any confusion that a shinnecock rake
and a handscrape are the same. Other
devices to catch clams and oysters are
already defined in subtitles 10 and 11.

(Q) "SOFT-SHELL CLAMS" MEANS MOLLUSKS OF THE
SPECIES MYA ARENARIA.
