       the Great Seal and Vice Admiral of the s.d province
       (Who in this Cause Associated to himself Maj.r Genll Jn.o Hammond
       Jûdge of the Court of Vice Admiralty and one of her Majesties Hole
       Councill of the s.d province) in y.e Case of Margaret Macnamara
       Agt Tho.s Mcnamora her said bond

          The Petition of the S.d Margarett being read (as followeth) To his
       Excy Jn.o Cegnioûr Esq.r Cap.t Grald and Govern.r of Maryl.d &c.a

          The Humble petition of Margaret Mcnamara the ûnfortûnate Wife
       of Tho.s Mcnamara  
                                           Sheweth
                                                         
                                                          That Y.r Petitioner haveing heretofore
       been of Absolûte necessity Constrained After mûch patience to seek
       redress from Y.r Excy Agt the frûet Barbaroûs and Inhûman & say
       of an Unnatûral Hûsband towards her is now once more Compeled
       by his Continûed Intollerable Rigoûrs Severitys and Unchristian
       Dealings dayly Manifested to y.e World not only by Threats suffered
       out from a Man of his ûngovernable Temper to frighten a poor helpless
       Woman oût of her Life bût also by Merciless Stripes the
       Most Scûrriloûs Langûage ûnbecomeing a Man Tyrrannicall haûghty
       Domineering Carriage too Severe to be used even to Slaves and beastly lust
       (She Rushes to name it) in the Wye whereof his Indifferency in Choice
       of White or black Clean or foûl is Sûch that Natûres Law self
       preservation Dictates the Danger of Commerce w.th him to Implore     
       Y.e Excys protection from his barbarity and in Asmûch as it is Evident
       that there is no Safety for Y.r Petitioner ûnder the same
       Roof w.th him he haveing freqûently in his Mad Raptûres
       Exclaimed Agt himself for not Makeing AWay w.ch Y.r poor petitioner
       She most hûmbly prays that Y.r Excy will please to ûse Sûch proper Methods
       as Shall ûpon the Exigencies afd be thoûght Convenient for the
       preservation of Y.e poor petitioners Life agt his s.d barbaroûs finelties and
       that she may be permitted to Lye separate from him and be obliedged
       to Allow her sûch reasonable Maintenance as to Y.r Excy ûpon Consideration
       of his Circûmstances Shall be Thoûght proportionable thereunto
       And y.t Good Security be Given for performance of what Y.r Excy
       Shall Think fitt to Order in the premisses Else Y.r petitioner
       may be Sûre of being Left Destitute of Any Sûpport from his
       and her poor Childring Left to the Charity of the Coûnty w.ch
       She hopes Y.r Excy will prevent
                                                          And She will pray &c


       Y.r poor petitioner farther prays that he may be ordered to Deliver
       her Clothes and Other little necessaries being so stripped that she
       do not wherew.th to Shift her Self
