Caroline County Circuit Court, Certificates of Freedom, 1857-1864

State of Maryland Caroline County to wit:
             Whereas Martin Hicks hath made application
to me for a certificate of his freedom agreeably
to law.   And whereas on the oath of Chas A. Meed
has been proven that the said Martin Hicks was
free born      I do therefore grant this Certificate
He is now about 24 years of age five feet nine
and a half inches high or thereabouts of a light
chesnutt Complexion was born and
raised in Caroline County & has a scar on
each the 1.st and 2.d fingers of his left hand
and no other notable marks or scars that
I have observed.   In Testimony whereof I
          hereunto subscribe my name and affix
(seal)  the seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline
          County this 8.th Day of December 1857
                                                Robt. J. Jump, Clk


    Maryland Caroline County to wit:   I Robt J
Jump Clerk of the Circuit Court for Caroline
County hereby certify that it hath been proved
by testimony which is satisfactory to me that the
bearer hereof a negro man named James W
Friend aged about 31 years 5 feet 5¾ inches high
of a black complexion with a small scar
just over his right eye was born free & raised
in Caroline County.      In Testimony whereof
            I hereunto subscribe my name and affix
(seal)   the seal of the Circuit Court for Caroline County
           this 18.th Dec.r 1857            Robt J Jump Clk
