Town to His Excellency The Governor and Council]

Gentlemen On my Return to Fort Pitt in February last Know-
ing Mr Magruder had Received Orders to Recruit men for our
Corps during the war Gave Sergt Janes Orders to Reenlist Two men
of our Corps that was not During the war Janes Inlisted one of
them and a day or Two after one of the men Brought in A british
Prisoner of war who he said wood Inlist. Capt. Tannehill was sit-
ing By and knowing he wood wish for an Oppertunity to take the
Advantage of me Ask'd his opinion Capt Tannehill was of opinion
he wood doe very well in that Department and as it had been Fre-
quently done before thought propper to Inlist him Capt Tannehill
took an oppertunity that Evening to Acquaint the Comd' I had
Inlisted A british Prisoner and Next morning Started for Phila-
delphia.
A few days After I was ordered to the Cetannion and weightd
on the Comd' for orders he then told me he had understood I had
Inlisted A british Prisoner of war I acknoledgd I had and begd to
Know who had Reported me he told me Capt Tannehill had and
said he disapprovd of it much and if he Knew of any person there
he wood have them sent of I expected as the Comd' had disapprovd
of his Inlistment and I being Commanding Officer of the Core it
was my duty to discharge him and as I inlisted him the Money
and Clothing then lay at my Risk and as he had spent the Money
and defacd the Clothes took the first oppertunity to Discharge him
and got as much as I thought wood pay for his Clothing and the
Money he had Receivd and Acquainted Capt Tannehill with what
I had done on his Return and my Reason for doing it
Capt. Tannehill was of opinion I had done Rong and said he had
mentioned it to the Comd* but did not meen to Report it every Gen-
tleman that is Acquainted with Capt. Tannehill must know that he
is not so void of sence that must know that it was the Comdts Duty
to call me to an Account if I had done Rong whether he ment it
or not
this was the last of June I told Capt. Tannehill I thought I was
very Justifiable in what I had done if he thought I was Rong he was
very wellcom to take the Advantage of it I continued at Fort Pitt
untill the Twentyeth of July and heard more of it and then got leave
of Absence to Cumberland on my Return was very kindly Receivd
by Capt. Tannehill and in a day or Two after understood Capt
Tannehill had been speaking very disrespectfull of me on account of
my discharging the Above prisoner I then weightd on the Comdt
and Requested he wood send for Capt Tannehill and let me be pres-
ent Capt. Tannehill said he had understood I had dischargd McCleod
the above prisoner I acknowledgd I had and Acquainted the Comdt
