In 1922, the General Assembly established a
commission to determine a location for a two-year
teachers' college on the Eastern Shore. A site was
selected and the institution opened as the State
Normal School at Salisbury in September 1925.
The School was renamed as the State Teachers
College at Salisbury in 1935, and as Salisbury State
College in 1963. The College became Salisbury
State University in 1988 (Chapter 366, Acts of
1988).
Since its founding, the University has successful-
ly met increasing demands for quality education and
today offers four-year undergraduate programs in
liberal arts, sciences, and in the professional fields
of business administration, education, medical tech-
nology nursing, respiratory therapy and social
work. In addition, the University's graduate
division offers master's degree programs in business
administration, education, English, history nurs-
ing, and psychology
Today Salisbury State University stands as a
nationally accredited four-year multipurpose liberal
arts university. It offers 36 distinct undergraduate
and graduate degree programs.

University College derives from the evening
courses that were offered by the University from the
1920s through World War II. In 1947, the College
of Special and Continuation Studies was estab-
lished to administer the off-campus evening
programs. Its principal officer was the dean. It was
renamed University College in 1959. In 1970, the
College was designated as one of five major UM
campuses headed by a chancellor.
University College extends the resources of the
University of Maryland System to adult, part-time
students throughout the Stare and around the
world. It offers bachelor's, master's, and noncredit
professional development programs. The cur-
riculum, class schedules, registration procedures,
and comprehensive student services have all been
designed to create an academic environment that
supports and encourages the educational goals of
busy adults.
Evening and weekend classes meet at more than
25 locations throughout Maryland, the District of
Columbia, and Virginia. The European and Asian
divisions conduct degree programs for U.S. military
personnel and their families at more than 200 loca-
tions in twenty-two countries.
