                                                1836.                                            67.

1833 Chapter 261.
            On motion of Mr. Coale the following Preamble and Resolution
were read and adopted:
                Whereas, by an Act of the General Assembly of the State of
Maryland, passed at the Session of 1833 Chapter 261, section 3rd.
it is provided that upon the meeting of the persons returned elected
Electors of President and Vice President of the United States, as provided
for by this Act, or as many of the said persons as may attend
on the day appointed by the Constitution and Laws of the United States,
before proceeding to perform the trust reposed in them, the place
or places of any absent member or members may be supplied by
the members present who shall have the power to appoint the same,
and the said person or persons, when appointed qualified shall
be entitled to all the rights and privileges of those proclaimed by
the Executive Authority of the State as duly elected Electors of President
and Vice President of the United States; and whereas, on
the First Wednesday in December (being the Seventh of the Month,)
the day appointed by the Constitution and Laws of the United States,
John S. Purnell, elected and proclaimed by the Executive Authority
of the State of Maryland as duly __________ elected an Elector
of President and Vice President of the United States has not attended
in the City of Annapolis, as directed by the Legislature
of Maryland, to discharge his duty as an Elector.
                    Therefore,
                Resolved, that in pursuance of the above recited Act of the
General Assembly, Thomas G. Pratt be and he is hereby appointed
to fill the vacancy in this Body occasioned by the absence
of John S. Purnell, as aforesaid.
                Thomas G. Pratt Esquire appeared in the Senate chamber
qualified by taking the oath prescribed by the Constitution and the
Laws, and by declaring his belief in the Christian Religion, and
took his seat.
                On motion of Mr. Ricaud the Electors then proceeded to
ballot for President and Vice President of the United States,
in conformity with the requirements of the Constitution and Laws.
                On motion of Mr. Ricaud,
                William Henry Harrison, of the State of Ohio was put in
nomination for President of the United States.  And,
                On motion of Mr. Kimmel,
                John Tyler, of the State of Virginia was put in nomination
for Vice President of the United States.
                The ballots of the Electors were deposited in the ballot box
