100 ~  [8 November 1692] Commission of Joshua Barkstead as Surveyor of Somerset

LIONEL COPLEY, ESQ. Cap’t Gen’rl and Gove’nr in Chief in & over their Ma’ties Province & Territory of Maryland: To Joshua Barkstead of Somerset County Gent’ Greeting:  ~~~~~~~~

Out of the Especial trust and Confidence I have in your discretion fidellity & circumspection as well as your skill & judgement in the Art of Surveying of Lands I have ordained constituted & appointed and by these presents do ordain contitute & appoint you the said Joshua Barkstead to be surveyor of Somerset County aforesd, to the utmost bounds limits & extents thereof hereby authorizing and impowering you to survey or resurvey for any person or persons any tract or parcel of land or lands in the said County according to such Warrants, Orders and precepts, instructions & directions as shall from time to time and at all times hereafter be directed from me, from the Counsel Board, the Surveyor Gen’ll of this Province or other Officer to be here after thereunto lawfully authorized & appointed.  And in all things you are to act doe & performe as to the place & office of survey belongeth, or as any Survy’r of a County may or of Right ought to doe. PROVIDED that in any new or fresh Survey or Resurvey hereafter to be by you made, you intrench not upon nor run therein the lines of any former or more ancient survey, or Land reserved for the Lord Baltimores use, nor direct your courses contrary to his L’pps late Condicion of Plantation of this Province, but in all things duely & regularly proceed, as hath been the custome and practice of former Surveyors, and the Rules & instructions to them given and prescribed. TO HAVE & TO HOLD  the said Place & Office of Surveyor of Somerset County aforesaid, for and during pleasure.  Given under my hand & seal this fourteenth day of October in the fourth year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord & Lady King William & Queen Mary.  Anno Domini 1692.
