to one year of service, but except as otherwise provided, in no case
shall more than one year of service be creditable for all service in
one calendar year. The board of trustees, under such rules and regu-
lations as it shall adopt, shall allow credit, however, to members
absent in the military service during World War I or within the
period beginning September 1,1940, and ending December 31, 1945,
or within the period beginning June 1, 1950, and ending June 1,
1959, for the period of their absence, provided that such members
were teachers when they entered such military service and [within
one year from the date of their discharge] who again became
teachers. However, any teacher whose board of education had
granted him a leave of absence immediately before he left for mili-
tary service shall be considered to have left the teaching profession
for military service. Service rendered for the regular school year
in any district shall be equivalent to one year's service.
Sec. 2. And be it further enacted, That this Act shall take effect
June 1, 1959.

(House Bill 642)
AN ACT to repeal and re-enact, with amendments, Section 25 (a)
of Article 51 of the Annotated Code of Maryland (1957 Edition),
title "Juries", sub-title "Qualification and Selection of Jurors",
raising the pay for jurors in Carroll County.
Section 1. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That Section 25 (a) of Article 51 of the Annotated Code of Mary-
land (1957 Edition), title "Juries", sub-title "Qualification and Selec-
tion of Jurors", be and the same is hereby repealed and re-enacted,
with amendments, to read as follows:
25.
(a) Jurors in Washington County shall receive six dollars per
day; in Dorchester, Kent, Queen Anne's and Caroline counties, seven
dollars and fifty cents per day; in Somerset and Worcester counties,
seven dollars and fifty cents per day; in Anne Arundel County, ten
dollars per day, and no extra allowance shall be given either for
mileage or overtime in Anne Arundel County; in Carroll County,
eight dollars per day; and in all other counties, except Allegany,
Baltimore, Frederick, Harford, St. Mary's and Wicomico counties,
five dollars per day for each and every day they shall attend the
several courts of this State as jurors and fifteen cents for each mile
over five miles for going to and returning from the court, once in
