674 Appendix.

1781
August 8

to blow the Rebels brains out. whether he had hard or soft Money in
his Chest? he said he had none, they demanded the keys, he had
them not. they Rumaged the Cart & took out 5 Pewter Plates & 2
good Hatts almost New out of the Hat Box. They said among them-
selves come let us go the damned old Rebel has nothing but old rusty
pewter. He proceeded on to William Smiths House, those 3 Men as
he has heard followed him at some distance. Affirmed to in Council.
William Smith of the same County, declares That on the last day
of October 1780. between 11 & 12 o'Clock at night a Number of Men
6 or 7, beat at his door & threatened to break it open. He had some
of his People open the door. 3 Men armed with Guns, John Taylor,
Thos. Lumber & Thos Hastings of Virginia rushed into his House,
they demanded a Chest belonging to Smith Horsey with 9000 half
Joes Smith said there was no such chests there, that Smith Horseys
chest had been carried away the day before. That they seeing
Kreemers Chest near the foot of the Bed with the But End of their
Guns knocked open the lid & lifting the Tile found a Box of Hard
Money at which they rejoiced & carried the Chests into the yard &
emptied it of every thing that was in it & divided it as he since
understood among the whole Company, the other men were Saml
Tomlin. Babel Maddux, George Mason & John Mason. The first
3 Men went up Stairs & took out of Kreemers other chest many
valuable Goods & brought them down in Arm fulls, in dividing the
Money out of doors they dropt a Guinea & a half & some Cut velvet
in the Grass.
The Robbers demanded what other Rebel Property were in Smiths
House, he said his property was Rebel property if they called it so.
but they took nothing of his but some paper money which was in
Kreemers chest that Smith had given him to carry to Bait. He told
them that some of the Money in that Chest was his about 1700f.
which they promised to return but never did.
Sworn to in Council Tho: S: Lee
Babel Maddox came before a Magistrate, John Williams & in-
formed of the above Transactions, but Williams never bound him
over or took any security from him. Maddox is a Man of Land &
Property, he entered into an obligation to Mr Williams to make
amends to Kreemer & to convict the others.
A True Inventory of the goods Lost By Plundering Belonging to
Christian Kramer on the seventeenth and Last of October 1780
To 1 Barrel Pork 40lb of Bacon 40lb of Soap 307£ hard money :
1700£ In Paper money Eight silver table spoons & six Tea spoons.
a golden Locket two sets of Ear Bobs: two Dozen of Holland Sheets
three Country Sheets, 15 yards of Holland Linen.
8 yards of Check Linen, 5 Large Table Cloths, a Dozen and half
Napkins, a Dozen and half Pillow Cases. 5 Towels 9lb of spun thread
