Baltimore County sst On the 24th day of August 1781 Came James
Rouse before me the Subscriber one of the Justices of the Peace for
the Stae of Maryland & made Oath on the Holy Evangelist of Al-
mighty God that on the 4th day of this Instant James Rouse Martin
Trout Felix Hughs made their Escape from the Brittish at Ports-
mouth said Hughs was five weeks with said Rouse & Trout untill The
People belonging to a barge Insisted to take said Hughes As a Spie
which we ofered to Prove to the Contrary telling Them that he was a
Deserter they taking him to talbot Goal we having no opertunity, the
Whole time said Hughs was In our Company he beheaved himself as
an Honest Sober man & a friend to the States of America sworn
before Me this 24th day of August 1781.

I do hereby Certify that the Deponent James Rouse, was Skipper
& Owner of a sloop Laden for acct. the State, that he has ever Con-
ducted himself as a friend to the Cause of America, always turning
out with the Militia on every alarm & that Credit may be given to his
Deposition.

[Special Council, Talbot Ct House to Mr. Baker.]

You will send your Sloop immediately round to Mr Seth's Mills in
Tuckahoe and there order your Skipper to wait for a load of flour
wch we have reason to believe will be ready by next Saturday or
Monday; He must take down with him a Manifest of his Load ex-
pressing marks Nos Tare and neat weight of every Barrell & pass
his receipt at the Mill on a Copy of such manifest when He is loaded
He must proceed with all possible Dispatch to Burwells ferry on
[James?] River or to such other place as you shall be informed has
been appointed for the Delivery of Provisions for the Army.
