Mr. Watkins submitted the following order as a substitute:

That the Speaker designate one of the committee clerks to
index the Journal, without additional compensation to his
regular per diem.

Which was read.

And, on motion of Mr. Baldwin, of Anne Arundel, laid on
the table.

Mr. Wilson, of Baltimore city, submitted the following
order :

Ordered, That a special committee of five members of this
House be appointed by the Speaker to draft suitable resolu-
tions or otherwise give expression of the views of this House
in regard to the funeral obsequies of the late George Peabody,
deceased, whose remains are expected to arrive at South Dan-
vers, Mass.,

Which was adopted

And Messrs. Wilson, of Baltimore city, Merrick, Marbury,
Kilbourn and Hammond, constituted said committee.

Mr. Jordan submitted the following order:

Ordered, That it be entered on the Journal that Airhart
Winters is absent on account of not being able to make the
train connection.

Which was adopted.

Mr. Merrick submitted the following order:

Ordered, That the Committee on the Judiciary be instruct-
ed to inquire and report what amendments, if any, are neces-
sary to make in the Article 45 of the Code of Public Laws,
entitled Husband and Wife.

Which was adopted.

The Speaker announced the following Standing Committees
of the House:

Committee on Elections,—Messrs. Loker, Carroll, Morso,
Wilmer, Hardcastle, of Caroline, Beck, Murdock.

Committee on Ways and Means.—Messrs. Merrick, McLane,
Kilbourn, Hardcastle, of Talbot, Watkins, McCreery, Blake,
Brown, Kean.

Committee on Claims.—Messrs. Colton, Seibert, Webb,
Welle, Collins, Baldwin, of Hartbrd, Gordy.
