ditional animal; for every score of sheep or swine
five cents per mile, and in proportion for less num-
bers; for every score of cattle per mile ten cents,
and for less numbers in proportion; for every
horse and rider, or every led or driven horse, one
and one-half cents per mile.

Sec. 8. And be it enacted, That the Directors of
said Company shall have power to make and adopt
such by-laws, rules and regulations for the direc-
tion and management of said Company as may in
their judgment be necessary for the purposes of
their corporation, not inconsistent with this char-
ter, and the laws and Constitution of this State;
and the President and Directors, or a majority of
them, shall constitute, appoint and employ such

officers, agents and servants for the construction,
preservation and repair of said road, and for the
receipt and collection of tolls and the transaction
of all other business of said Company as in their
judgment may be necessary.
Sec. 9. And be it enacted, That if any person or
persons riding or driving anything whatever, or
leading the same, shall therewith pass through
any private gate or bar, or turn off said road with
the intention of avoiding the payment of toll, all

and every person so offending shall, for every such
offence, forfeit and pay to the said President and
Directors a sum not exceeding twenty dollars, to
be sued for and recovered, with cost of suit, before

a Justice of the Peace, in like manner as debts of
similar amounts may be sued for and recovered;
and if any toll-gatherer shall demand and know-
ingly receive any greater toll than he is authorized
to receive by this Act, he shall forfeit ten dollars
for every such offence for the use of the county.

Sec. 10. And be it enacted, That if any person or
persons shall wilfully, by any means whatsoever,
injure, impair or destroy any part of said road or
any of its necessary works or buildings, or place
any obstruction on said road, or if any person or
persons shall effect or attempt to effect an entrance
through any toll-gate on said road by force, vio-

lence or intimidation, such person or persons so
offending shall be subject to an indictment in the
Circuit Court of the county, and upon conviction
of such offence, shall be punished by fine and im-
prisonment, in the discretion of the Court.
