seaboard cities impregnable, and the interests heretofore
mentioned are of national as well as international importance,
and the acquisition and change in said canal necessary to fit
it for the purposes aforesaid can be effected at a comparatively
small expense when the vast importance of the work is con-
sidered, therefore,

Be it resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That
the Representatives and Senators from Maryland in the Con-
gress of the United States" are hereby requested to use their
best efforts to secure an appropriation by the Federal Govern-
ment of sufficient money to acquire and enlarge the said
Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, in order that it may be
used by the war ships of the navy and the merchants shipping,
as an inland waterway, for the purposes of public defense and
international commerce.

And be it further resolved, That the Governor of Mary-
land be and he is hereby requested without delay to transmit
a copy of these resolutions to each of the said Representatives
and Senators from Maryland.

Joint Resolution requesting our Senators and Representatives
from the State of Maryland in Congress assembled to use
their best efforts to secure the encampment of National
Troops at Oakland, in Garrett county, Maryland.

Preamble.

WHEREAS, That national troops are concentrated annually
and encamped in several sections of the United States; and
WHEREAS, The climate of Oakland, Garrett county, its
beautiful surroundings, isolation from large cities, transporta-
tion facilities, low temperature during the summer months, at
which time said encampment is held, makes it an eminently
proper place for the holding of such an encampment ; now,
therefore,

Be it resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland,
That the Senators and Representatives from Maryland in
Congress assembled be and they are hereby requested to use
their best efforts to make known the advantages of Oakland,
Garrett county, Maryland, for a national army camp or
encampment and to secure the location of the national army
encampment at Oakland, Garrett county Maryland ; and

Be it further resolved, That the Governor be and he is
hereby requested to send a copy of these resolutions properly
engrossed, with the great seal of the State affixed, to each of
the Senators and Representatives from Maryland in Congress
assembled, and also a copy to the General of the United States
Army.
