Mary Spearman
Kent County fs.t The Jurors for the Right
Honble the Lord prop.ry that now is for the
body of Kent County afd upon their oath
do psent that Mary Spearman late of Saint pauls parish in the
County afd Spinster the tenth day of June Anno Dom Seventeen
hundred twenty and Seven at the parish afd in the County afd
within the Jurisdiction of this Court did committ fornication with
a Certain person to the Jurors afd unknown and did permitt the
same unknown person then and there to have Carnall knowledge
of her body and to beget then and there a bastard Child on the body
of her the same Mary to the high Displeasure of Almighty God to the
Evill Example of all others in such Case offending Contrary to the
peace of the said Lord propry that now is his good rule and Governm.t
and against the form of the Act of Assembly in that Case made &
provided
Test George Hastins                            T francis Cler. pac.

        On the back of the preceeding Indictment was as foll.s viz.t
        A true bill by Thomas Hynson foreman

    And the afd Mary Spearman in her proper pson comes and
Saith that she Cannot gainsay the Indictment afd so as afd ag.st
her brought nor but that she is guilty of the premisses above upon her
Imposed as by the afd Indictment it is alledged and thereupon submitts
to the Court

    Therefore it is Considered by the Court here to wit at the Court
house in the Town of Chester in Kent County this twenty fourth day
of November Anno Dom 1727 That the afd Mary Spearman receive
at the publick whiping post Eleven Lashes well laid on her bare back
till the blood appear as a punishment for her afd Crime of comitting
fornication in form afd Confest also it is Considered that she pay
the sum of two hundred twenty three pounds of Tobacco Costs
accruing on the premisses afd to the Officers of this Court

    Ordered by the Court here at this Day to wit the day & year afd
that the Sherrf of Kent County take her the said Mary into his
Custody & Execute the punishment in the Judgment afd specefyed
and afterward to bring her into Court again Of which said pcept
the said Sherrf to wit John Gresham Gent high Sherrf of Kent
County makes Return thereof on the Day and Year last said
