1840.

Resolution relative to the Proceedings of the Electors of
President and Vice President of the United States.

WHEREAS, at a meeting of the Electors of President
and Vice President of the United States, in and for this
State, held in this city, on the first Wednesday of Decem-
ber last, the following preamble and resolution were adopt-
ed, to wit:
"WHEREAS, it is understood that no record has been kept
of the proceed ings of the Electors of President and Vice Pre-
sident of the United States in and for the State of Maryland,
except for the years eighteen hundred and thirty-two and
eighteen hundred and thirty-six, nor of any of the forms
connected therewith, nor of the names of the Electors,
nor of the persons voted for, from time to time, for Presi-
dent and Vice President of the United States, by the Elec-
tors duly elected by the people of this State; and whereas,
it is important and proper that the same, so far as practica-
ble, should be obtained and preserved among the archives
of this State — therefore,
"Resolved, That it is respectfully recommended to the
General Assembly of Maryland to cause to be procured
from the proper office of the General Government, full and
authentic copies of so much of the proceedings of each
and every College of Presidential Electors of the State of
Maryland, prior to the year eighteen hundred and thirty-
two, as may be there found, and to have the same recorded
in a book for the purpose to be obtained, together with the
proceedings of the Colleges of the years eighteen hundred
and thirty-two, eighteen hundred and thirty-six, and the
present year. "
AND WHEREAS, in the judgment of this General Assem-
bly, the record contemplated in the aforegoing preamble
and order, ought to be made, for the purpose of preserving
among the archives of the State, the evidence of acts re-
quired to be performed by the people of Maryland by the
constitution of the United States, and which are highly
important and interesting parts of her history — therefore,
Resolved by the General Assembly of Maryland, That:
Joseph H. Nicholson, the Secretary of the said Electoral
College, be directed to procure from the office of the Se-
cretary of the Senate of the United States, authenticated
copies of the certificates of the Electoral Votes of Mary-
land, and record the same as proposed by the aforegoing
resolution of the Electors.
