6 SIXTEENTH ANNUAL REPORT

of Somerset County, and he experienced there, at first hand, the record
problems of our county officers; as Comptroller of the Treasury he super-
vises the expenditure of all state funds for record'keeping supplies and
equipment; and as a member of the Board of Public Works he must pass
on all requests from state and county officers for the destruction of records.
The staff of the Hall of Records will surely benefit from his wide expe-
rience and his constant interest in Maryland records.

At the same general election the voters of Maryland elected a new
Governor, the Honorable Theodore R. McKeldin. The losing candidate
was former Governor William Preston Lane, Jr., who had been Governor
and a member of the Hall of Records Commission for four years. It was
at Governor Lane's request that the Hall of Records Commission organised
the Department of Information and then sponsored the legislation which
made that division of the Hall of Records an independent agency. It was
also at his request that we undertook the publication of the Maryland
Manual In many other ways he showed his interest in and his appreciation
for our work. We have reason to anticipate a like interest on the part of
Governor McKeldin, whose training as a lawyer, as a historian and as chief
executive of Baltimore City has acquainted him with our local and state
records.

There were no meetings of the Commission during the year.
