Jane, one ditto Rachel, one ditto Mary, Slaves for life, and sound in body and in mind
To Have and To Hold the said above named negroes unto the said Joseph Weatherly his
heirs and assigns forever, to his and their sole use and uses forever, and to and for no other
use intent or purpose whatsoever, against me the said Samuel R. Dunnock and my heirs
and against all persons whatsoever shall and will warrant and forever defend by these presents
             In Testimony whereof the said Samuel R. Dunnock has hereunto subscribed
his name and affixed his Seal this twenty first day of August in the year of our Lord
One thousand eight hundred and fifty two

State of Maryland Dorchester County ss:                           Be it Remembered and it is
hereby Certified that on this twenty first day of August in the year of our Lord
one thousand eight hundred and fifty two personally appeared Samuel R. Dunnock
party vender named in the foregoing instrument of writing before the subscriber one of
the Justices of the peace for the County and State aforesaid, and did acknowledge the
same to be his act and deed, according to the true intent and meaning thereof, and delivered
the same for the uses and purposes therein mentioned.  And on the same day also personally
appeared before me Joseph Weatherly the party vendee named in the foregoing instrument of
writing and made oath on the Holy Evangely of Almighty God that the Consideration stated
in the within and aforegoing bill of Sale is true and bona fide as therein set forth

Dewit Clinton Handley      Be it remembered and it is hereby Certified that the following
    Exd   from                      Bill of Sale was received and recorded on the 30th day of August
Thomas James Lecompte    1852 to wit:
                           [Stamp]   This Indenture made this twenty third day of August anno Domini
                           [50 cents]  
eighteen hundred and fifty two by and between Thomas J. Lecompte of Dorchester County
State of Maryland of the one part and Dewit Clinton Handley ^of the County & state aforesaid of the other part witnesseth whereas the aforesaid David Clinton Handley^ has become answerable and
bound as Surety to the aforesaid Thomas James Lecompte for the payment of Sundry
debts now due or about to become due and payable to certain divers creditors of the said
Thomas J. Lecompte and the said Thomas J. Lecompte being desirous to secure and save
harmless the said Dewit Clinton Handley against all responsibility and risk as surety
of the debts and liabilities aforesaid; therefore this Indenture witnesseth, that the said
Thomas James Lecompte as well for and in Consideration of Securing the said surety
Dewit Clinton Handley from the payment of the said debts, or from the payment
of any part or parcel thereof, and for the further Consideration of five dollars to him the
said Thomas J. Lecompte in hand paid by the said Dewit Clinton Handley at and
before the execution, Sealing, and delivery hereof, the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledge
hath granted, bargained, sold, released and Confirmed, and by these presents doth grant,
bargain, release, and Confirm unto the said Dewit Clinton Handley his heirs and assigns
all and singular the goods, chattels furniture and household stuff, hereinafter particularly
